There used to be an infectious warmth for Azeem whenever Hakim interacted with him, all this had vaporized like the fizz that goes out of a soda bottle. Azeem could not comprehend the timing of events, how can all this fizzle out so quickly? A flash of thoughts bolted through his distracted mind.
“I am naïve”
“I was fooled, no I am a fool and simpleton”
“I should run away from all this; I should have never joined this company”
“Everyone is laughing at me; I am a nobody anymore”
He was panting, gasping for air, it was a two-minute walk but felt like an eternity.
“How am I going to feed my family, I will have to pull the kids out of school”, he was now profusely sweating fearing a heart attack. He felt like the walls caving in on him, the corridors seemed strange.
An employee forgets his position in an organization, the daily routines create a hallucinating amnesia and one goes around his daily chores thinking nothing bad would ever happen to him. Even the thought of joblessness doesn’t careen past him, no one ever keeps a resume handy; only when a fellow colleague is terminated then the reality veers starkly from the haze and a zombie turns to a human. It’s just like a trip to a graveyard…
